Dr Bruce Ames
Dr Bruces Ames is a renowned scientist. Senior Scientist at Childrens Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), director of their Nutrition & Metabolism Center, and a Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and he was on their Commission on Life Sciences. His over 550 publications have resulted in his being among the few hundred most-cited scientists (in all fields).
In the early 1970s, Dr Bruce Ames developed the Ames test, which uses bacteria strains to detect potential carcinogens. It represented an alternative to animal models, allowing to screen a large number of compounds rapidly and cheaply. Nowadays, the Ames assay is a worldwide used test recognized by Regulatory Agencies and Authorities.
